The Ballad of Bixby Belle!

Thursday, May 3rd, 2012

Well howdy do kiddies, it’s your old pal the Knolls Ranger getting’ ready to spin you one of my world famous yarns.  Now thissy here one’s near and dear to me for it’s all about a literal doll by the name o’ Belle who happens to be my best gal.  My heart beats three times what the docs say it’s supposed to when she shows up on the Atlantic Cooridor grinning pure as pudding and waving that cowgirl hat of hers around.  I’m real thankful she’s back in my life and thought y’all might like to here the story about how she came to be.  It all has to do with magical LA river run-off, the Dooley family, and the simple beating of two hearts.  But this ain’t the kind of tale one just tells alright, heavens now, a story this splendiferous can only be sung.  So without further ado I give you the whopping’ campfire song, The Ballad of the Bixby Belle as composed by country western legend Steamboat Smolar and best appreciated when sung to the tune of the Beverly Hillbillies.

Come hither, take a listen

to a sordid type of tale

’bout a misses supersticious

that we call the Bixby Belle

Her origins are well known

from here to Belmont Shore

it all started in our Lord’s year

around 1954

Her friend, the Knolls Ranger

got Belle as a reward

from Mrs. Dooley’s doll collection

when he washed and waxed her Ford

The Knolls Ranger carried Belle

almost everywhere he went

with a notable exception

when he gave her up for lent

One day, trouble came a-brewin’

for the Ranger and his gal

They were by the LA River

when the Ranger tripped and fell

He tried to correct his stumble

but the pavement he did meet

while the doll fell in the river

the Ranger scrambled to his feet

After Bixy Belle had fallen

our Hero dove right in

To save his dear companion

and to be with her again

When the Ranger found Belle

he was surely quite surprised

for the magic of the river

put a sparkle in her eyes

Our Belle, now a real girl

she was no longer a doll

she could talk and think and yodel

and go shopping at the mall

Now the Bixby folks all rejoice

to have a super homespun team

the Ranger and Bixby Belle

are as sweet as peach ice cream

I credit all the sweetness to my wonderful girl, the apple of my life, the eye of my light!  Why just take a gander at her humble and benevolent being.

The June First Frizzle-Dizzle

Monday, June 13th, 2011

Jumping Jehosephat boys and girls, the Knolls Ranger’s in the house giving you the scoop on June’s First Fridays event.  First Fridays, our very own community evening art walk, is growing by leaps and bounds every month and is easily the largest such event in Long Beach (next stop the world).  The event is marked by its swell business deals, bohemian performers, and unleashed imagination.

June saw our favorite Bixby businesses light up with performances by bands as diverse as Good Citizen (a pop, folk, and soul group stationed outside of The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf), The Sepulveda Jazz Project (the offices of Edward Jones), Bluegrass crooners TED! (EJ Malloys), swing and jive artists Hot Club du Bop (Georgie’s Place), folk maiden Alyssandra Nighswonger (It’s A Grind Coffee House), 80s tribute band The Repeat Offenders (Nino’s After Hours), and more.

But that’s not all…one-man-band Timstrument was grooving, Elmo the muppet was dancing, there were lovely “ladies” at Roy Robbins Gifts and Stationery, Darren Held’s Held2Gether Improv was tickling funny bones at Elise’s Tea Room, and my old nemesis Dr. Illiterate showed up to my reading at Councilmember Johnson’s ”First books” event to challenge me to a read-off.  Fear not true believers, I won and Dr. Illiterate won’t be darkening Bixby’s door again.  Or will he….???

Check out these snapshots of the evening and see for yourself!

Feeling Foolish on a Friday First

Friday, April 1st, 2011

The First Friday of every month, Bixby Knoll’s and it’s manifold businesses are open late and inviting artists to come play!  Truly a unique event in Long Beach First Fridays is second only to the LA Art Walk in scale and magnitude, and it’s growing every month.  What follows is but a mere peek into April’s First Friday!

As a legally ordained minister, I renewed the vows of Wade and Laura Ashley at Melinda McCoy's Flowers

The Potential Lunatics played to stunned street crowds

And multiple Elvii (the plural of Elvis) roamed the streets. The one pictured here was the one not on stilts.

Be sure and join us on Atlantic between Del Amo and Wardlow, May 6th from 6 to 10 PM for imporv comedy, jazz musicians, bluegrass, pirate book readings, Marx Brothers film screenings, the ranger’s antics, and more.

Hearken, A Great First Friday Is Come!

Feelin' the First Friday Funk

Please pardon the archaic English in this articles title Bixby blogsmiths, but the Knolls Ranger is old school about his joy for First Fridays!  In fact, back in 1949 (the year it was established) my grammar teacher at Hughes Middle School made me stay in class writing “I will not use the word come as an unaccusative intransitive verb.” indefinitely while all the other kids were cutting rugs over at the sockhop.  (Thanks a lot Mrs. McMurphy!)

School was tough for bean-pods

But anyway true believers, this, as always, is The Knolls Ranger, champion of the community, brave boy of Bixby, and one time Yak herdsmen in Tibet (I’m full of stories!).

And let me tell you of all the things I love in Bixby Knolls (baby gecko’s in Reptiles Unlimited, Sunday strolls with the royalty, Mike Mora’s facial hair, etc.) I think I just might love First Fridays the most.

Best Beard in Town

Now granted asking a ranger to choose his favorite BKBIA program is a bit like asking my old friend Papa Steve which one of his 14 children he loves the most, but First Fridays is unique in Bixby Knolls.  Heck, it’s unique in Long Beach!  Hey, it’s unique in CA!  Higgeldy piggeldy, it’s unique in the USA!  You know what, I can’t think of an arts and business event like it in the entire solar system!  (There is one very similar in a neighboring galaxy however, but instead of calling it First Fridays the bizarre denizens of that celestial system simply call it BLEESNAX 7)

What makes First Fridays so darn tootin’ unique is it’s successful merging of two worlds (business and art) by promoting and supporting the local actors, crafters, and music makers that make this city vibrant while drawing attention to all of our favorite local watering holes as well.   Every month due to the concerted efforts of folks like former child actor Victoria Wells, Picasso-legged magic man Blair Cohn, dog Annie, the lovely Ms. Morgan Wraight, and the always amicable Krista Leaders  we see more and more businesses open late housing galleries, bands, and performance artists!

As always I was there to give you the good word and shake my tail feathers.  And as always the paparazzi was there documenting my actions and slinging barbed queries at me demanding to know details about my weekend trip to Barbados with Branjelina among other things.  (“I don’t know how many times I have to tell you people, Nothing happened!  We JUST ranged ok?!”)
