Hectic, Eclectic, Heterogeneous August

Monday, August 6th, 2012

Well call me a banana slug slippin’ and slidin’ it’s way down a persian rug!  The First Fridays art walk which began so humbly nearly six years ago has not only grown by leaps and bounds but it has continued to adhere to the integrity of small business activation, local arts appreciation and the DIY spirit of greasing one’s elbows!  At this rate we predict it to surpass LA’s Art Walk by 2013.  You read it here first!  Let’s see what August had to offer shall we?

Local artistes and designers shared their wares!

Councilmember James Johnston unveiled the name of Long Beach’s latest park and the largest one since 1952!  Unfortunately the winning name suggestion wasn’t Park Pantry though we tried our best to sway the vote.  Fortunately the name was still pretty majestic.  Welcome Willow Springs!

Salon Medusa continued to do the ‘do’s you want done!  Adding green faux-hawks and other treats to the scalps of adorable rock-a-billy toddlers of every creed!

Mimes from Gatsby Books entertained onlookers at the Expo Furniture Warehouse until such time as they needed rescue from nefarious invisible glass boxes!

I checked in on the relative safety of the streets with my most trusted of Bixby Buckaroos!

But perhaps the most exciting treat for the evening, (and the weirdest!) was a musical theatre performance by the Musincanto Academy of Music who traveled all the way from Crema, Italy just to perform in our first fridays event.  They booked no other shows in the United States.  They only came for us.  And if that’s not an indication of the powerful magnetic draw of the weirdness and wildness of Bixby Knoll’s First Fridays we don’t know what is!

Seeya next month Bixby!  Stay Strange!

A One Year Anniversary of Friday Firsts

Recursive Rangers

September heralds the one year anniversary of Regnar Sllonk’s rangerly duties.  That’s right it was one year ago tonight that the ranger first thawed out of his frozen repose in the window of the Long Beach Historical Society and began greeting all the wonderful citizens!

And, as if in answer to the ranger’s heightened state of nostalgia, September’s First Friday was an even larger gala affair than normal!  Between Justin Rudd’s Say “Cheese!” Long Beach 24 hour digital photo contest (on display at the Expo Furniture Warehouse) and The Potential Lunatics performance outside the BKBIA office there was much to thrill to.  But don’t just take our word for it, look at the antics the ranger got up to yourself!

Feelin' the First Friday Funk

Please pardon the archaic English in this articles title Bixby blogsmiths, but the Knolls Ranger is old school about his joy for First Fridays!  In fact, back in 1949 (the year it was established) my grammar teacher at Hughes Middle School made me stay in class writing “I will not use the word come as an unaccusative intransitive verb.” indefinitely while all the other kids were cutting rugs over at the sockhop.  (Thanks a lot Mrs. McMurphy!)

School was tough for bean-pods

But anyway true believers, this, as always, is The Knolls Ranger, champion of the community, brave boy of Bixby, and one time Yak herdsmen in Tibet (I’m full of stories!).

And let me tell you of all the things I love in Bixby Knolls (baby gecko’s in Reptiles Unlimited, Sunday strolls with the royalty, Mike Mora’s facial hair, etc.) I think I just might love First Fridays the most.

Best Beard in Town

Now granted asking a ranger to choose his favorite BKBIA program is a bit like asking my old friend Papa Steve which one of his 14 children he loves the most, but First Fridays is unique in Bixby Knolls.  Heck, it’s unique in Long Beach!  Hey, it’s unique in CA!  Higgeldy piggeldy, it’s unique in the USA!  You know what, I can’t think of an arts and business event like it in the entire solar system!  (There is one very similar in a neighboring galaxy however, but instead of calling it First Fridays the bizarre denizens of that celestial system simply call it BLEESNAX 7)

What makes First Fridays so darn tootin’ unique is it’s successful merging of two worlds (business and art) by promoting and supporting the local actors, crafters, and music makers that make this city vibrant while drawing attention to all of our favorite local watering holes as well.   Every month due to the concerted efforts of folks like former child actor Victoria Wells, Picasso-legged magic man Blair Cohn, dog Annie, the lovely Ms. Morgan Wraight, and the always amicable Krista Leaders  we see more and more businesses open late housing galleries, bands, and performance artists!

As always I was there to give you the good word and shake my tail feathers.  And as always the paparazzi was there documenting my actions and slinging barbed queries at me demanding to know details about my weekend trip to Barbados with Branjelina among other things.  (“I don’t know how many times I have to tell you people, Nothing happened!  We JUST ranged ok?!”)

Salon Medusa does the Ranger Right!

Look at all this product!

Hi Ho Citizens!  I’m back with another Ranger recommendation for y’all!  Yee-ha!

As those of you in the know’lls may recall, I was born from a chance paring of an old abuelita woman and a bean pod in the fields of Lakewood circa late 1800′s.  And I’ll be darned if I’ve had my haircut once in over 120 years!  I knew that this lapse in grooming on my part could not stand and so I saddled up my gumption and trudged over to Salon Medusa.

Feel a Snip Comin' On

At first I was afraid somebody would shove a gorgon’s decapitated head into my line of vision and turn me into stone, but I quickly discovered that the name of the place was not indicative of the product (whew!).  Not only was my stylist amicable, and beguiling but she was downright sagacious to boot!  Git along little doggies!

The Scalp Massage

In addition to a competent cut, the friendly staff of Salon Medusa gave me a scalp massage, a shampoo job, and a muffin! I think I died and went to ranger heaven!

The Muffin Offering

But snacks aside, the process was so complex that I was shocked at how relatively modest the prices were!  At one point the stylist had me smell her fingers, I can’t imagine that this is a part of typical human grooming but it was heavenly.

The Finger Sniff

The stuff they put in my hair apparently had exfoliation fighting properties due to tree bark!  So now I can add mighty anti-desquamate hair to my list of super powers!  Also, due to my being part bean pod, every cut hair left on the salon floor serves as a kind of seed stolon, and carries with it the genetic information neeeded to grow another ranger.  Just plant one of those suckers in some shady soil and boom!  Baby Ranger Pod People!Pod Progeny

So, if for no other reason than the free muffin, Salon Medusa is the way to go when it comes to styling, cutting, shaping, coloring, extending, or otherwise altering your hair!  But don’t just take my word for it, see for yourself!
